'Socialism in One Country' policy
Trotsky's idea
Trotsky wanted a World Revolution. According to him, the communist revolution had to be permanent and world wide. He wanted all our ressources and efforts directed to that end, so that the Soviet Union could build itself up in security when it was sure it wouldn't be attacked.
My idea
Trotsky's idea was a terrible one, of course. How could we possibly share our socialist ideas with the world when there were traitors within the Union itself? My idea was much better: before attacking the rest of the world we had to become a powerful socialist country. And to become a powerful socialist country we all had to be of the same opinion - the socialist opinion, obviously - and we had to develop our productivity and industrialisation to catch up with the Western level of development. Only then would we be ready to defend ourselves from attacks, and therefore be ready to attack ourselves.
